Contemporary Child (HS 210)

Course Outline

The overall theme of this course is the social life of children and adolescents. We explore their emotional and behavioral responses and how teachers and counselors can deepen their understanding of the world that today's youth face.

Topics include: social exclusion, addiction, trauma and stress, peer group influence, ADHD, non-verbal learning disorder, anger and its relationship to the temperaments. Each theme is approached on a developmental basis, tracing issues from the early elementary through the high school years. This is a facilitated response-based course guided by the practical needs and questions the participants bring from their work with young people.
