Arts/Art History (HS 128)

Learning Goals

To understand a phenomenological approach to the arts and art history. Through observation, discussion, and the reading of relevant material we explore the orientation to the arts which a high school teacher needs in order to bring the arts to life in the classroom. Course content complements and deepens studio arts exercises in, to begin with, sculpture and painting. The approaches of Goethe and Steiner to aesthetics are central to our studies.

Topics Covered

We explore the arts and their mission, especially in regard to the visual arts. Art of the past and art in the present. Out of what do we create? Metamorphosis as an active principle in art historical development and in the artistic process itself. The role of the arts in education and culture generally.
