Eurythmy (HS 134)

Learning Goals

This course, designed for the prospective high school subject teacher, introduces the elements of movement and orientation in space through eurythmy. The course seeks to bridge academic and other artistic areas by working with poetry, music, and movement. The goal is to awaken the participants' understanding of their expressive potential and finding the joy of working within a group. Classes include discussion and require a journal. Reflections on learning as an adult through movement (or kinesthetic modality) are key. The journal is part of the notebook which is presented at the end of the course.

Topics Covered

Introduction to the language of eurythmy: contraction and expansion, the vowels and consonants in visual space as well as in sound. Questions from the class. Creating a choreography as a group exercise. Symmetrical patterns, movement in all directions: forming the five-pointed star with music and poetry.

Gesture as expression of soul: relating the vowel sounds to silent expression. Creating a form with gestures to a poem with musical accompaniment. Notebook and journal check-in.

Eurythmy as a social art. Integrating what we have worked on into a presentation. Summation: what does it mean to have eurythmy in a high school curriculum?
