To explore the nature of the sounds of speech through an experience of listening to and reciting poetry
To enable Waldorf Education students to approach a text as lyric, epic, or dramatic gesture and then to speak out of this gesture, using the proper breathing, imagination, movement, and form
Following an introduction to the day's subject, classes take up group and individual recitation of speech exercises and texts. Emphasis is on group work during the beginning weeks and on individual work during the final weeks.
Lyric poetry: The nature of lyric poetry; Movement in speech; Breathing and imagination; Intervals in speech; Speech exercises relating to lyric poetry
Epic poetry: The nature of epic poetry, ballads, fables, and stories; The use of imagination in Epic poetry; Rhythm and meter; Speech exercises relating to epic poetry
Dramatic poetry: The nature of drama; Drama as a conversation; Basic gestures in acting; Speech exercises relating to dramatic presentations. Review and preparation for group and individual presentations
