Professional Seminar (HS 218)

Learning Goals

This course complements the various subject seminars by taking up practical topics of common concern to all Waldorf high school teachers. The format is interactive, with students and faculty sharing observations and role playing. Students should be ready to bring sample "case studies" to at least some of the themes laid out below.

Possible Topics to be Covered

  • "Reading the student" in terms of physical characteristics, life dispositions, soul qualities, and individual genius; painting a living portrait of your students on three different kinds of "canvas"
  • Four temperaments and seven planetary styles
  • Rhythms of teaching: daily, two-daily, weekly, and monthly. Practicing review and recapitulation
  • Guidelines for independent study and the research project; Getting the most out of an internship or practicum
  • Teenagers and their temptations: dealing with the lure of drugs, sex, and technology
  • Polarities of violence and apathy. Social and anti-social forces in adolescence
