Rudolf Steiner spoke often of the need to prepare new soul qualities for the coming age, in which each of us will feel the pain of every other human being as our own; each will recognize the absolute value of every other human being; and all will feel united in the single being of humanity. As he described it, spiritual life will then be wholly individual and everyone will have his or her own religion; each will know complete freedom of thought; there will be no collective ideology; and reality will be universally understood to be spiritual. Christ will live in our memory, as well as in our thinking, sensing, and speaking, while Sophia, divine feminine wisdom, will become known as the selfless love for all creation. The human task is to prepare for this age, which, according to Steiner, will emerge historically from the Russian or Slavic soul. Beginning with the prophets of the Romantic Period, we will take up those Russian writers, theologians, and poets, as well as various postmodern thinkers, who can show how to prepare oneself to walk a way of selflessness, beauty, gratitude, love, community, and unconditional hospitality and thereby begin to understand Anthroposophy itself in a new way.
